Buddy Tubinaghtewa is a nationally renowned kachina carver and painter who grew up on Hopi Mesa. His original Grandfather's Journey was crafted into a figurine.
He works in the “old” style of carving, painting and adornment, drawing on a rich heritage of decorations and shapes, some dating back more than 400 years. At the same time he is one of the new generation of carvers who moves away from traditional styles by adding movement and intricate details through the creative use of electric tools. Deeply rooted in Hopi culture and tradition, he has developed a style and a flair that is uniquely his own.
Buddy’s distinctive carvings vary from Hopi dolls to larger carvings of other Hopi symbols: bears, birds, eagles and hawks – each with a special story and significance. His paintings – done in both acrylic and oil – are powerful, individual interpretations of Hopi ceremonies mixed with personal memories of growing up in one of the most stark and striking areas of the Southwest.
Pony Story: An agricultural people, the Hopi have sustained themselves for millennia in the Northern Arizona desert without the benefit of rivers or streams. The Hopi way is to work hard, pray, sing, take part in ceremonies and create images they believe will summon help from spirit beings. This Hopi artist has incorporated a variety of traditional Hopi symbols into his design, all of which revolve around rain and moisture, and a successful harvest. Butterfly maidens are believed to help pollinate crops. Nothing could grow without the sun. Dragonflies are signs of a natural spring.
The Trail of Painted Ponies celebrates the magic of the horse as an artistic canvas, the rich culture of America, and the unique talents of independent artists. The artists behind this exquisite collection come from all different backgrounds, and the inspirational stories behind each design are as heartfelt as they are beautiful.
The Trail of Painted Ponies announced that Westland Giftware would no longer be reproducing Painted Ponies. Beginning in January 2010, Enesco became the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of The Trail of Painted Ponies figurines and other merchandise. The Westland molds were broken and all of these original Westland Ponies should become even more highly sought after, rare, and valuable.
My photos are of the actual pony in this listing! Please consider these images as part of the description.
I have looked this pony over carefully and can detect no obvious cracks or chips in it prior to shipping. Please note that some ponies (particularly older ones)may have minor imperfections or show signs of touch-up, such as under-paints or over-paints (as most ceramic and some resin pieces do) that occurred during manufacturing, as each one is hand painted. Most painted pony boxes have shelf wear or the tag may be creased or slightly bent; this does not affect the pony in any way. The pony was displayed in a glass cabinet for my personal enjoyment;
